by Samantha on February 12, 2013

Valentine’s Day is around the corner but a romantic dinner with your significant other is out of the question. You’re the parent of young children so any plans to head out to the latest foodie hotspot must remain as a distant fantasy for now.

Thankfully, all hope is not lost as parents can indeed savour Valentine’s Day – literally and figuratively – with a memorable meal that includes the kids. After all – Valentine’s Day is all about spending time with loved ones – no matter how young.

1) Dress For Success – Make it special and dress up. Let your daughter wear her favourite dress and your son put on his special shirt. It will add a celebratory air to the festivities.

2) Plan a Kid-Friendly Menu – Make children’s favorite meals like homemade macaroni and cheese and pizza with a gourmet spin; use higher quality cheeses and toppings to transform the ordinary into the special in honour of the occasion.

3) In the Red – It’s about Valentines Day, right? Make red the color of the evening. Have a red tablecloth, encourage your kids to wear red and consider serving child-friendly red cocktails as well.

4) A New Holiday Tradition – Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to start a new tradition with your kids. How about “Dinner and a Movie” with the family? There are plenty of G-rated films to enjoy and as with other holidays, why not make a point of watching them each Valentines Day?

5) Fun and Games – Gather the family around for a board game or cards. If the kids are young, consider making simple arts and crafts before or after dinner.
